Frequently Asked Questions

What causes dyspepsia?

Causes include acid reflux (GERD), H. pylori infection, peptic ulcers, medications (NSAIDs), and functional dyspepsia. Dr Mahesh can determine the cause through careful assessment and investigation.

Do I need a gastroscopy for dyspepsia?

Gastroscopy is recommended if you have alarm symptoms (weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, anaemia), are over 55 with new symptoms, or haven't responded to treatment.

What is H. pylori and how is it treated?

H. pylori is a stomach bacteria causing ulcers and dyspepsia in some people. It's detected by breath test, stool test, or biopsy. Treatment is a 7-14 day course of antibiotics plus acid suppressants. Success rate is about 90%.

Why won't my indigestion go away?

Persistent symptoms may indicate untreated H. pylori, medication side effects, functional dyspepsia, or overlooked conditions. Dr Mahesh can investigate comprehensively and optimise treatment.

Are over-the-counter antacids enough?

Short-term use is often fine, but long-term symptoms need proper diagnosis. Masking symptoms can delay diagnosis of treatable conditions. Private consultation ensures thorough evaluation.

How much does investigation cost?

Initial consultation £225, gastroscopy from £1,500. H. pylori breath test can be arranged quickly. Same-week appointments often available.
