Frequently Asked Questions

Do all gallstones need treatment?

No, many gallstones are 'silent' and found incidentally. Treatment is needed for symptomatic stones causing pain, or if stones have passed into the bile duct. Dr Mahesh will advise based on your situation.

What is ERCP and when is it needed?

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) removes stones from the bile duct using an endoscope. It's needed when stones cause jaundice, pancreatitis, or infection. Dr Mahesh has performed 1,500+ ERCPs.

Is ERCP safe?

ERCP carries some risks including pancreatitis (5-10%), bleeding, and infection. Dr Mahesh's high-volume experience minimises complications. He'll discuss risks and benefits with you before proceeding.

Do I still need gallbladder surgery after ERCP?

Usually yes. ERCP removes bile duct stones but not the gallbladder. Most patients need cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) to prevent recurrence. Dr Mahesh works closely with surgical colleagues.

How quickly can I be seen for jaundice from gallstones?

Jaundice with gallstones is urgent. Dr Mahesh offers rapid assessment and can perform ERCP within days if needed. Contact his secretary directly for urgent appointments.

How much does private ERCP cost?

ERCP costs from £3,000 privately. This includes the procedure, sedation/anaesthesia, and follow-up. Check with your insurance as many policies cover ERCP.
