Frequently Asked Questions
How do you test for H. pylori?
Tests include urea breath test (most common), stool antigen test, or biopsy during gastroscopy. You must stop PPI medications 2 weeks before testing for accurate results. Dr Mahesh advises on appropriate testing.
How is H. pylori treated?
Standard treatment is triple therapy: a PPI plus two antibiotics for 7-14 days. If this fails, quadruple therapy with bismuth is used. Eradication rate is approximately 90% with first-line treatment.
Is H. pylori dangerous?
Most infected people have no symptoms. However, H. pylori causes most peptic ulcers and slightly increases stomach cancer risk. Treatment is recommended if infection is causing symptoms.
Can H. pylori come back after treatment?
Reinfection after successful eradication is uncommon (1-2% per year). A confirmatory breath test 4-6 weeks after treatment ensures eradication. Dr Mahesh recommends confirmation testing.
Does everyone with H. pylori need treatment?
Treatment is recommended if you have ulcers, dyspepsia symptoms, family history of stomach cancer, or are starting long-term NSAIDs or aspirin. Asymptomatic infection in low-risk individuals may not need treatment.
How much does H. pylori testing cost?
Breath test costs approximately £150-200. Consultation with Dr Mahesh is £225 new, £125 follow-up. Gastroscopy if needed costs from £1,500.
