Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's?

Ulcerative colitis affects only the large bowel (colon) with continuous inflammation. Crohn's can affect any part of the gut with patchy inflammation. Dr Mahesh uses colonoscopy and biopsies to make accurate diagnosis.

Will I need surgery for ulcerative colitis?

About 20-30% of UC patients eventually need colectomy. Modern medical therapies have reduced this. Surgery is curative and many patients do very well after it. Dr Mahesh refers to experienced colorectal surgeons when needed.

How often do I need colonoscopy surveillance?

Surveillance colonoscopy is recommended every 1-3 years starting 8-10 years after diagnosis to screen for colorectal cancer. Dr Mahesh performs high-definition colonoscopy with careful inspection and biopsies.

Can stress cause ulcerative colitis flares?

Stress doesn't cause UC but can trigger flares in some patients. Managing stress is part of comprehensive UC care. Dr Mahesh takes a holistic approach to IBD management.

What are the latest treatments for ulcerative colitis?

New biologics (vedolizumab, ustekinumab) and JAK inhibitors (tofacitinib) have expanded treatment options. Dr Mahesh stays current with IBD advances and can discuss all available options.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral needed for private appointments. Contact Bolton (01204 404404) or Blackpool (01253 308031) directly to book.
